Why isn't it free to use this site?

The British Newspaper Archive offers thousands of articles for free with its free to view pages. You can find these by selecting the search filter 'Free to View' under Access Type either in Advanced search or in the left hand side of your search results. Learn more about our Free to View pages in our Blog.

The British Newspaper Archive is also free to search in the British Library reading rooms.
In addition to the reading rooms and from the comfort of your own home, you can also search this website for free. You get a preview snippet for each result so you can see whether that result is relevant to you, you can then choose to pay to access the full page.

This precious collection has been made available for you to search online by a team of people digitising individual newspaper pages which, understandably, has come at a substantial cost. It is therefore necessary for us to make a charge for full access to pages but please be assured our pricing for online access is in line with other commercial family history resources and we will review our prices regularly to ensure that we remain competitive.

You choose either pay-per-view or a subscription depending on what your likely level of use is going to be.

Please click here to see our current prices - we are offering some great deals.
